Carmen Whitman most recently worked at the Charles A. Dana Center as a Program Coordinator for the mathematics team.
The Charles A. Dana Center is a research unit of the College of
Natural Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. The Dana Center
provides Texas education leaders and policymakers with new knowledge
about teaching and learning by facilitating informed deliberation of important education issues. The Center also supports teachers in
implementing high academic standards for all students.
In this position Carmen Whitman provided the mathematics team with her
expertise in mathematics gained from her years of experience as
a middle school classroom teacher. As part of a team of experienced
researchers and educators, Ms. Whitman worked closely with national,
state, and local education partners on numerous projects, standards
implementations, and publications.
Ms. Whitman
also developed several resources for teachers while at the Dana Center
to be used in the implementation of the TEKS in the mathematics
classroom.

Additionally, Ms. Whitman was
the coordinator of the 2003 Southwest Connected Mathematics Academies
sponsored by the Dana Center and works closely with the Center to help
districts implementing Connected Mathematics.
Ms. Whitman continues to work closely with the Connected Mathematics Project at Michigan State
University. She provides training for their National Getting to
Know Connected Mathematics Conferences.

Prior to joining the Dana Center in 1998, Ms. Whitman taught middle
school mathematics in Corpus Christi, Texas for the Corpus Christi
Independent School District, and served as a secondary mathematics
specialist for Austin Independent School District. While in Corpus
Christi, she was also site coordinator for the Connected Mathematics
Project / Texas Statewide Systemic Initiative Implementation Pilot.
Ms. Whitman has worked with mathematics curriculum alignment for
several Texas state educational organizations and similarly with several
Austin, Texas area school districts. Additionally, she has provided teacher professional
development at the district, state, and national levels. As a lecturer
and speaker, Ms. Whitman has participated in mathematics seminars,
conferences and workshops in many cities throughout the United States. |
